Our Purpose

Poverty is the mother of all human afflictions. It causes enough suffering of its own and makes every other problem worse. In the 21st century, its unfathomable to us that a majority of the human population lives in poverty – some so abject, that they can’t afford food – let alone any of the things that will enable them to pull themselves out of poverty.

Poverty will arguably kill more people and cause more suffering in our lifetime than any other manageable cause will in the entire future of mankind. And so, we believe the elimination of poverty should be the highest priority goal for anyone who cares about human wellbeing.

The causes of poverty are complex and rooted in anthropology and history. Most people poor today are poor for no fault of their own, and society has a responsibility to address this injustice. We believe the simplest solution is to establish a basic minimum income that lifts everyone out of poverty, and gives people the opportunity to use their energies and talents to create progress for themselves and their families – not to merely survive. This is the Utopia foundation’s purpose.
